HB Power out of Shotgun Trips X Nasty Offset WK is a gap scheme run play that pulls the backside guard (and often a fullback or tight end) across the formation to lead through the hole while the offset back takes the handoff and reads the point of attack. This is a power run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and it wins with double team blocks at the point of attack and a lead blocker isolating the first threat in the alley. The primary read for the ball carrier is to press the hole created by the double team, then read the puller's block to decide whether to bounce outside or cut back inside against overpursuing linebackers.
Pre-snap, count the box: if the defense has stacked eight in the box or shown a run blitz with both linebackers creeping to the line, this play loses its numbers advantage and should be checked out of. Watch the play side defensive end and outside linebacker alignment, since a wide nine technique or an overhang defender sitting outside the tackle can blow up the pulling lead blocker before he reaches the hole. Key the middle linebacker's depth and flow, if he is sitting tight and reading the guard pull immediately he will beat the puller to the hole and force a cutback. User-controlled defenders flying downhill from a Mike or Sam linebacker spot are the biggest threat to this play, so if the defense shows aggressive user pressure at the second level, expect the cutback lane to be the better outcome. This play struggles against goal line or heavy fronts with extra defensive linemen, and it is most vulnerable to inside blitzes that shoot the gap before the double team can form.
Check the box count before the snap and only run this into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box since Power struggles against stacked fronts.
Use manual control on the pulling blocker briefly if you see a linebacker flowing hard to the play side, then release control back to the ball carrier to make the final cut.
Attack base 4-3 and 4-2-5 fronts where the play side defensive end and outside linebacker can be sealed by double teams, since heavy odd fronts with a nose tackle can clog the intended gap.
Pair this with Sft Inside Zone from the same set to keep linebackers guessing between gap and zone run action, then mix in Sft PA Curl Seam off a similar run look to punish linebackers who are keying run fits too aggressively.
Ideal on second and short or first and ten when defenses are not yet in a dedicated run blitz package, and avoid calling it against known nano blitz packages that crash extra defenders into the backfield pre-snap.
