Mtn Triple Slants is a man beater built out of the Shotgun Trips X Nasty Offset WK set that uses pre-snap motion to shift the trips receivers and create horizontal spacing for a three-man slant concept. All three receivers on the trips side break in on quick slants at different depths, stacking the underneath zones and giving the quarterback a natural progression from the shortest slant out to the deepest. Blocking is standard pass protection with the offset back available as a check down or chip blocker, and the primary read starts with the inside slant working to the leverage of the nearest linebacker before working outside to the intermediate and deep slants.
Watch the flow of the linebackers after the motion, if they widen out to trail the motion receiver you are likely facing man coverage and the slants will have clean separation. Key the free safety depth at the snap, a single high safety cheating toward the trips side signals Cover 3 or Cover 1 and the intermediate slant becomes the primary window. User the underneath linebacker or nickel defender to sit in the shallow slant lane, this is the biggest lurk threat that can bait the quarterback into an easy pick six on the shortest route. Look for two deep safeties splitting the field evenly, which usually means Cover 2 or Cover 4, in this shell squeeze the flat defender and force the quarterback into a tighter throwing window on the deepest slant. Watch for corner blitzes off the trips side, if the corner crashes down pre-snap the slant concept loses its outside protection and the quarterback must speed up his first read or check it down immediately.
Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the snap since a defender running with the motion man confirms man coverage and opens up the slant conflict for easy separation.
Attack this play on third and short to medium distance where linebackers are more likely to sit in shallow zones and get picked off by the stacked slant releases.
Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or hitch if you see a corner sitting hard on the inside slant window, especially versus Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells.
Pair this with Mtn Drag Sluggo or Mtn Slot Fades in the same set so the defense has to respect vertical shots off similar motion, making the slant window even easier to access on the follow up call.
Snap the ball quickly on the fastest slant read if you see a blitz look, since the quick game timing beats most nano blitzes before the extra rusher arrives.
