Snag Slot Digs pairs the classic Snag concept to one side (corner, flat, spot) with a slot receiver working a dig route across the middle of the field, making it a Cover 3 beater built to punish sinking zone defenders. The Snag portion occupies the underneath zone defender and the deep third corner, while the dig sits down in the vacated hole behind the flat defender and in front of the deep safety. Primary read progression starts with the corner route to see if the deep defender bites, then works to the dig sitting in the middle void, and checks down to the flat/spot man beater if the underneath defenders widen or blitz.
Look for a single high safety pre-snap paired with cornerbacks playing off coverage, which usually signals Cover 3 and opens up the dig route in the intermediate middle void. Watch the flat defender and underneath zone defender at the snap, if they widen with the Snag flat route the dig window stays clean for a big gain. Beware a user-controlled linebacker sitting in the shallow middle zone or spying the quarterback, since that defender can jump the dig route if the quarterback stares it down too long. Two deep safety shells with man coverage underneath (Cover 2 Man or Cover 4 Man) shut this down quickly because the dig has no room to sit and the corner route runs into the deep half safety. Watch for late blitz disguises out of the slot or nickel defender since a delayed blitz can collapse the pocket before the dig has time to develop, forcing an early checkdown to the flat.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing a three deep shell since this play is specifically designed to punish Cover 3 zone drops. If the corner over the trips side is playing off and soft, expect the Snag corner route to occupy him while the dig sits down for an easy completion. Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or slant if you see man coverage across the board, since the dig can get picked off by a robber linebacker in man concepts. Use this on second and medium to third and medium situations where the defense is likely to sink into zone drops instead of blitzing. Pair this with Mtn Drag Sluggo or Quick Fork Zig in your play-calling sequence so the defense cannot sit on the same intermediate zone window snap after snap. If the middle linebacker is sitting directly in the dig window, look to your check down or flat route instead of forcing the throw into the lurk defender.
