Breakdown

Sft Inside Zone is a zone run play out of the Trips X Nasty Offset WK set in Shotgun 11 personnel, using pre-snap motion to shift protection and identify man versus zone coverage before the snap. The offensive line executes a standard zone blocking scheme with double teams at the point of attack that climb to the second level, while the fullback or offset back seals the play side edge. The primary read is the running back reading the play side double team (typically the guard and tackle or center and guard) to decide between the bend, bang, or bounce lane based on how the defensive tackle and first linebacker flow.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify the safety shell. A two high shell with light boxes (6 or fewer defenders) is the green light to run Sft Inside Zone since the numbers favor the offense. Check cornerback depth on the trips side. Off coverage corners suggest zone drops that will be slower to fill run support, which favors the cutback lane. Post-snap, key the play side defensive tackle. If he gets pushed off the line by the double team, expect the running back to press downhill through the bang lane. Watch for a user-controlled linebacker crashing the A or B gap immediately at the snap, which signals a run blitz or nano blitz designed to blow up inside zone at the mesh point. This play struggles against stacked fronts with an extra defender walked into the box, heavy blitz packages that send both inside linebackers, and aggressive man coverage that allows corners to crash run support quickly since it removes the cutback advantage.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to check if the defense is playing man coverage (defender runs with the motion man) or zone (defender passes off or stays put), which also tells you if a run blitz is likely coming downhill.

Run this out of early down and medium to short yardage situations, especially first and ten or second and short, to stay ahead of the sticks and keep the defense honest.

Pair Sft Inside Zone with Sft Read Option and Sft PA Curl Seam from the same set so the defense has to respect the run action every time you break the same formation, setting up play action shots later in the drive.

If the defense stacks the box with 8 or more defenders pre-snap, consider hot routing the play side receiver into a quick slant or bubble as an outlet rather than forcing the run into a loaded front.

Watch the mike linebacker's alignment before the snap. If he is walked up tight to the line, expect a fast fill and be ready to bounce the run outside using the RB's cutback vision.
