Breakdown

Spot Shake is a Shotgun 11 personnel concept out of Tight Flex Offset that layers a classic spot combo (flat, corner route, hitch/spot sit) with a shake element from the slot to attack both man and zone coverage. The shake route works underneath as a rub or pick-influenced quick separation route, giving you a built-in answer against man-heavy looks while the corner route stretches zone defenses vertically on the outside. Primary read progression starts with the shake or quick underneath route to see if you get instant separation against man, then works to the flat as the outlet, and finally climbs to the corner route for the explosive shot if the safety bites down on the underneath stuff.

Defensive Reads

Identify man coverage pre-snap by checking if the slot cornerback is aligned tight with no safety help over the top, which tells you the shake route will win immediately. Watch the flat defender post-snap since in zone coverage he will widen with the flat route, opening a throwing lane behind him for the shake if it settles into that void. Key the playside safety after the snap because if he crashes down on the shake or flat routes, the corner route behind him is your home run window. Beware Cover 3 with a hard buzzing safety, as that rotation can undercut the corner route and force you to check down early to the shake. Look for a user linebacker spying or lurking in the shallow middle since he can jump the shake route if you telegraph the throw, so use pump fakes or manipulate your eyes to freeze him.

Usage Tips

Check the pre-snap alignment of the slot defender because the shake route lives and dies on winning that initial rub or leverage against man coverage.

If you see two deep safeties with soft corners, prioritize the underneath shake and flat combo to move the chains instead of forcing the corner throw into a deep half defender.

Use this on second and medium or third and short since the shake route is designed to win quickly against man and get positive yardage before the pocket collapses.

Hot route the flat route to a quick out or option route if you diagnose a Cover 2 shell pre-snap, since the corner boundary player will sit on that flat window.

Pair this with Mtn Spot Dig or Mesh Spot in your play sequencing so defenses cannot sit on the shake concept, then hit them with Mtn Fork Y-Corner as a shot play once they start jumping the underneath routes.
