PA Switch Verts is a play-action shot play out of Shotgun Tight Flex Offset designed to attack single high and two high safety shells with a switch release vertical stem, sending receivers on crossing vertical paths to confuse man coverage defenders and stack zone defenders in deep thirds. The play-action fake from shotgun holds linebackers and freezes the strong safety for a beat, opening throwing lanes for the deep switch concept while a checkdown or drag underneath serves as the outlet. Primary read progression starts with the switch release verticals to the play side, working from outside to inside, then comes down to the underneath crosser or backfield checkdown if the top of the coverage stays intact.
Identify single high safety pre-snap, since that alignment signals man coverage or a Cover 3 shell that this switch vertical concept is built to stress with the deep crossing paths. Watch the strong safety and free safety depth at the snap, if they bite hard on the play-action fake it opens the seams for the verticals before the defense can rotate back. Key the flow of the linebackers after the fake, slow or aggressive linebacker reactions confirm the run fake is working and the middle of the field will be open for the underneath checkdown. Beware disguised Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with deep half or quarter defenders sitting on top, since those shells can take away the switch verts and force you into the checkdown read. Look for user blitzers off the edge, since play-action rollout timing can be disrupted by a well timed user cross blitz that beats the fake before the switch routes clear.
Call this on early downs or in shot play situations when you have already established the run game with Inside Zone or HB Draw from this set so linebackers bite on the play-action fake.
Check pre-snap for two high shells and look to hot route the backside receiver into a hitch or shallow drag if the defense shows heavy zone drops to shrink the field.
Against man coverage, trust the switch release to create natural rub and separation, and take the shot to the receiver who wins the switch matchup rather than forcing the first read.
Use motion or a shift pre-snap to identify if the defense is playing zone match or true man, since that dictates whether you attack vertically or work back to the shorter option.
