Mtn Choice is a man beater built around a choice route from the mountain (Mtn) concept, giving the primary receiver the option to break in or out based on the defender's leverage. The concept pairs the choice route with underneath crossers and a vertical clear-out to occupy the deep safety, while the offensive line runs a standard shotgun protection to give the quarterback a full-progression read. The primary read starts with the choice route receiver reading the defensive back's hip and leverage, then works to the underneath crosser as the secondary option if the choice is capped.
Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment to determine if the defense is playing single high or two high, since the choice route's effectiveness depends heavily on man coverage being present. Watch cornerback press versus off alignment on the choice receiver, as press coverage forces a quicker option decision while off coverage gives more room to break either direction. Post-snap, key any user-controlled defender flashing down into the shallow crossing route, since a smart user lurk can jump the underneath option and bait a turnover. This play struggles against zone shells like Cover 4 or Cover 6 where multiple defenders can sit in the choice route's window and rob the option. Look for blitz packages that bring an extra rusher off the edge, since the choice route develops slightly slower and a well timed nano blitz can force an early throw.
Motion or shift pre-snap to identify man versus zone before the choice route runs its option, since the whole concept hinges on the receiver reading man leverage correctly.
Use this against Cover 1 and Cover 3 man variants where the choice receiver can exploit inside or outside leverage from a single defender in isolation.
Hot route the vertical clear-out receiver deeper against single high safety looks to fully remove the safety from the picture and open the choice route window.
Pair Mtn Choice with Mtn Fork Y-Corner or Mtn H-Texas in your play-calling sequence so the defense cannot key on the choice concept alone, forcing linebackers and DBs to respect multiple option routes from the same personnel.
Best used on second and medium or third and short where the choice route's option nature guarantees a high percentage completion against tight man coverage.
