The out route breaks hard to the sideline to create instant separation against man coverage, while the angle route works from the backfield or attached alignment across the field, giving the quarterback a leverage-based answer to blitzes and man match concepts. The primary read progression starts with the H-back angle route against linebackers in man coverage, then works to the slot out if the corner is playing off or if the flat is open.
Watch for man coverage indicators pre-snap such as corners aligned inside or outside with no help over the top, which signals the angle route should win versus a linebacker in man. Identify blitz packages by counting box defenders, since the angle route serves as a built-in blitz beater when extra rushers are sent and the H-back leaks out into space. Read the flat defender post-snap on the slot out route, since a squatting corner or underneath zone defender can jump the route and bait a turnover if the quarterback throws it late. Diagnose two high safety shells before the snap, since split safety zone coverage with disciplined linebacker drops can take away both the angle route and the out route by clogging the underneath passing lanes. Watch for a user controlled linebacker spying or shading toward the H-back release, which telegraphs a lurk threat designed to jump the angle route and force the quarterback to the shorter out route.

Hot route the backside receiver into a quick hitch or slant if you diagnose zone coverage, since the base concept is more effective against man than it is against zone drops.
Use this play on third and short to medium distances where the out route timing and angle route separation can convert quickly against off coverage or blitz packages.
Pair this call with HB Draw or Inside Zone earlier in a series to get linebackers creeping up in run support, then come back to Slot Outs H-Angle to exploit vacated underneath zones.
If the user controls a linebacker and sits on the angle route, work directly to the slot out route since the sideline throw is low risk against a defender playing inside leverage.
