HB Slip Screen

Breakdown

HB Slip Screen out of Shotgun Tight Flex Offset is a designed screen play that gets the offensive line to release upfield while the HB slips out to the flat behind them, setting up blockers in space. This is a pure blitz beater, built to punish aggressive defensive fronts and man coverage looks where linebackers and edge rushers are crashing the pocket. The primary read is simple: check the HB immediately at the snap, let your blockers get set, and hit him as soon as he shows separation, since holding the ball too long against a good pass rush that reads screen can blow up the whole concept.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing Cover 0 or Cover 1 man with an all out blitz package, since that is the ideal look for this screen to hit big. Key the defensive ends and outside linebackers at the snap, if they are crashing hard upfield without containment discipline, this play has a green light to work. Post-snap, watch for a spy or a linebacker sitting flat footed in the backfield area, since a disciplined spy can blow this play up before blockers even get set. User controlled defenders who bail out of the rush and sit near the line of scrimmage are the biggest threat, since a smart human defender will jump the throwing lane rather than rush upfield. Zone coverage shells like Cover 2 or Cover 3 with linebackers reading the backfield tend to shut this down, since underneath defenders can flow to the screen before blockers get organized.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or after you have shown aggressive pass concepts like PA Switch Verts or Mtn Dagger H-Choice, since defenses that expect a drop back are more likely to bring pressure and get sucked upfield.

Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to bait defenders into showing blitz, then snap it right into their aggression since a delayed screen dies against disciplined defenders who sit and read.

If you see a nano blitz or overload pressure package pre-snap, this is one of the best answers in the set because the extra rushers only speed up their own demise by running themselves out of the play.

Avoid calling this against zone heavy defenses with linebackers sitting in shallow drop zones, since spy defenders and flat zone defenders can jump the screen for a loss.

Pair this with HB Draw and Inside Zone earlier in a series to condition the defense to respect the interior run game, which opens passing lanes for the perimeter blockers on this screen.
