0 1 Trap out of Shotgun Tight Flex Offset is a trap run concept built off 11 personnel that uses the guard(s) pulling across the formation to kick out or seal the first threat off the edge, letting the running back cut behind the trap block into a natural running lane. This is a run play designed to attack aggressive fronts and gap penetration, using the defense's own pursuit angles against them by baiting a defender upfield before trapping him. The primary read is the frontside trap block: the ball carrier presses the mesh point, reads whether the trap defender gets kicked out or sealed inside, then picks the correct side of that block to plant and go.
Watch the defensive line stunt calls before the snap. Twists and games where a lineman crashes hard inside are prime candidates to get trapped. Key the play-side linebacker depth. If he is stacked tight to the line and reading run fast, the trap lane can get clogged before the back reaches the hole. Identify whether the defense is in a one-gap penetrating scheme or a two-gap read-and-react scheme. Penetrating fronts get exploited by the trap, while disciplined two-gap fronts can shut it down. Look for a user-controlled defender flowing downhill too aggressively off the play-action fake, since that same aggression is what makes the trap block effective. Check for run blitzes or extra box defenders. If the defense sends a linebacker or safety on a run blitz through the trap gap, the timing of the pulling blocker can get disrupted and blow up the play.
Use 0 1 Trap against defensive fronts that show heavy penetration or upfield rushers, since the trap block relies on the defender crashing hard into the backfield.
Check the defensive tackle and edge alignment pre-snap. A 3-technique or wide 9-technique that likes to shoot gaps is exactly who this trap is designed to punish.
Pair this play with Inside Zone and HB Draw in your play-calling sequence so the defense cannot key on pulling linemen versus a straight zone blocking scheme, forcing linebackers to hesitate on every snap.
Avoid calling this against disciplined gap-control defenses or heavy inside blitz packages where linebackers are already filling downhill, since the trap block can get beat before it develops.
Run this on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) to stay ahead of the chains, then use HB Slip Screen or Mtn Dagger H-Choice off the same personnel to keep the defense honest on passing downs.
