Dragon Spacing

Breakdown

Dragon Spacing is a classic spacing concept out of Shotgun Tight Flex Offset that stresses the underneath zone with a series of staggered hitches, flats, and a shallow drag working horizontally across the field. It is primarily a zone beater designed to attack Cover 2 and Cover 3 by putting multiple receivers at different depths in the same throwing lane, forcing zone defenders to choose who to sink under and who to widen for. The primary read progression starts with the flat or drag route to the field side, working backside to the spacing hitch, and finishes with a check down to the backfield if the underneath zones are sat hard.

Defensive Reads

Read the depth of the underneath linebackers presnap since shallow zone drops from Cover 2 or Cover 3 sit right in the spacing lanes and get picked apart if they do not widen fast enough. Check for a user controlled defender lurking in the shallow flat or drag zone since a good user player can jump the horizontal stretch and take away the easy completion. Watch cornerback alignment at the snap because press man coverage with no safety help over the top can be exploited by a hot routed vertical or slant from the outside receiver. Identify blitz packages presnap by checking linebacker depth and edge alignment, since a hot linebacker crashing the backfield leaves the drag route wide open against man pressure. Beware disciplined Cover 4 or Cover 6 shells where safeties stay deep and linebackers drop directly into the spacing windows, since this coverage forces you into the checkdown read.

Usage Tips

Use Dragon Spacing on second and short to second and medium when the defense shows off man alignment or soft zone shells presnap. Motion the slot receiver before the snap to identify if the defense is playing man or zone based on whether a defender follows across the formation. If you see Cover 3 or Cover 4 with deep safeties sitting still, hot route the outside receiver into a deeper dig to punish the zone dropping underneath. Pair this play with HB Draw or Inside Zone earlier in a series to get linebackers cheating downhill, which opens up the drag and flat routes even wider against zone drops. Sequence this with Mesh Spot or Slot Outs H-Angle to keep the defense guessing between quick horizontal stretches and man beating crossers, forcing user linebackers to commit early and get exposed.
