Read Option lines up out of Shotgun Spread Slots Close with 10 personnel, showing four receivers spread wide (two on each side) and the QB reading the mesh point with the HB. The offensive line executes zone blocking with a read defender left unblocked on the edge, and the QB’s primary read is that crash defender to decide between keeping the ball or handing it off on the option path. This is a pure run play designed to attack light boxes and gap exchange, punishing defenses that crash too hard or sit too passive on the mesh.
Defensive Reads
Identify base 4-3 or 3-4 fronts with a clear read defender on the edge since this play is designed to exploit that exact assignment. If the defense shows an overloaded box with extra defenders crashing downhill, expect the QB to pull and bounce outside for explosive gains. User controlled defensive ends who sit and squeeze the mesh point take away both the give and the keep, effectively shutting the play down. Watch for linebackers flowing hard to the mound pre-snap since disciplined LBs who stay square can rally to both the dive and the keep. Man coverage on the outside receivers is largely irrelevant here since this is a run first concept, so focus your defensive keys on gap integrity and edge containment rather than route coverage.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and only run this into 6 or fewer defenders in the box for a numbers advantage. Watch the play side defensive end pre-snap since he is the primary read key for the QB option decision. If the end sits home and doesn't crash, pull the ball and attack the alley with the QB run. Pair this with 45 Quick Base or RNS Y Stick out of the same formation to keep defenses honest against both run and pass without changing personnel. Use this on early downs in run heavy sequences to set up later play-action shots off the same look, and mix in HB Draw from the set to keep linebackers from sitting on the mesh point.
