RNS Y Stick out of Shotgun Spread Slots Close is a classic Stick concept built to attack zone coverage with quick, high percentage throws. The backside receiver runs a vertical seam up the numbers, the outside receiver on the strong side works a corner route off the top of the stick, the Y (in-line receiver) sits down on the stick route at the sticks, and the halfback releases out of the backfield on a flat route to the same side, creating a natural high low read against zone defenders. The single receiver on the far left runs a vertical clear-out route, and the primary progression is stick to flat to corner, with the quarterback reading the flat defender first to decide between the stick and the flat before working to the corner route against zone shells.
Pre-snap, check for two deep safeties versus one high, since Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells leave the stick and flat combo wide open underneath. Key the flat defender immediately after the snap, if he sits on the running back's flat route the quarterback should snap to the stick route in the void behind him. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, shallow linebackers who crash the stick route signal man coverage or a blitz look, which should trigger a hot route to the slant or speed out. Post-snap, identify any user-controlled lurk defender sitting in the middle zone, since he can jump the stick route and undercut the primary read. Against blitz packages or nano blitzes, get the ball out fast to the flat or stick route before pressure arrives, since this concept relies on quick timing rather than a deep drop.
Use this on third and short to third and medium since the stick and flat combo is designed to pick up the sticks quickly against zone drops.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing zone or man by checking linebacker depth and safety rotation, since Stick concepts are true zone beaters that punish Cover 2 and Cover 3 defenders sitting in short zones.
If you see man coverage with no underneath help, hot route the Y stick into a slant or speed out to create separation instead of settling into a zone window.
Pair this play with RNS Streak or RNS 90 Replace Y Stick in your play-calling sequence so defenses cannot sit on the stick flat combo and must respect the deep shots off similar formation and motion.
Use play-action or run plays like Inside Zone and Trap earlier in a series to get linebackers to bite downhill, opening bigger throwing lanes for the stick route over the middle.
