RNS Hitches is a five-man route concept out of Shotgun Spread Slots Close with 10 personnel on the field. Both outside receivers and the inside slot to the strong side run vertical seam routes up the field, the running back releases into the flat as an outlet, and the tight end runs a quick hitch, sitting down at roughly five to six yards over the middle. This is a zone beater built to attack soft spots underneath while stressing the deep middle with three verticals, and the primary read progression starts with the hitch underneath before working outside to the vertical shots if the linebackers or safeties overcommit.
Defensive Reads
Key the middle linebacker's depth at the snap, since a shallow drop signals he is sitting on the hitch and you should look to the verticals immediately. Watch the safety alignment pre-snap, if both safeties are deep and split wide in a two-high shell, the seams have room to work but the hitch may be doubled underneath. Identify any user-controlled defender dropping into a lurk position over the tight end's hitch route, since that is the most common way defenses take away this play's easy completion. Look for Cover 3 rotation post-snap, if the corner to the hitch side sinks into a deep third instead of playing man, the hitch will settle into a soft window against the flat defender. Beware of disguised blitzes or nano blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge, since the running back's flat release is your best answer if pressure forces a quick decision before the verticals develop.
Usage Tips
Use this play on second or third and short to medium when defenses are likely to sit in zone shells and give up the underneath hitch.
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing two-high or single-high safety look, since the three verticals stress a two-high shell hard if the safeties bite on the run action or play-action tendencies elsewhere in the set.
If the defense shows Cover 3 or Cover 4 with deep zone drops, hot route the tight end's hitch into a quicker settle or check it down to the running back in the flat for a safe, high-percentage completion.
Pair this play with RNS 590 Nebraska or RNS 590 Texas in your play-calling sequence, since those verticals-based concepts create the same initial pre-snap picture and force the defense to respect the seams every time you break the huddle.
Against man coverage, snap the ball quickly and rely on the hitch as your first read since it creates natural separation against off coverage corners and slot defenders playing outside leverage.
