Breakdown

HB Draw out of Shotgun Spread Slots Close is a designed delayed run that shows four vertical receiver stems (two outside, two slot) to hold second-level defenders and drain the middle of the field before the handoff. The offensive line initially sets in pass protection to sell dropback action, then releases downfield to wall off the second level while the running back sits in the pocket for a one count before hitting the interior lane. This is a pure run play that punishes aggressive pass rush and man coverage tendencies, with the primary read progression being the frontside gap first, then bounce path if the linebacker flow overcommits inside.

Defensive Reads

Key the defensive line get off on the snap, since disciplined rushers who stay in their lanes and read run instead of crashing will blow this play up immediately. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they bite hard on the initial pass set and flow toward the route stems, the draw lane opens up big. Man coverage on the outside receivers and slots is a green light since those defenders turn their back to the backfield, but zone shells with underneath defenders sitting flat can trigger fast enough to fill the draw lane. Look for a spy or a linebacker staying home in the box pre-snap, that defender is the primary threat to shut down the interior gap. User controlled defenders lurking near the line of scrimmage rather than dropping into coverage should be treated as a sign the offense should abort and check to a different play at the line.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or in second and long when the defense expects pass based on the four man route release look. Watch pre-snap for blitz packages, since draws punish aggressive edge rushers who crash upfield and vacate the interior gaps. Pair this with 90 Y Shallow or RNS Y Stick out of the same set so defenses respect the quick passing game and stay in coverage drops instead of sitting on run fits. Use play action tags sparingly with this concept and instead let the route stems do the work of freezing linebackers before the handoff. Avoid calling this against defenses stacked in the box or showing run blitz looks, since there is no lead blocker to clean up extra defenders at the mesh point.
