Heavy Panther is the sledgehammer of the Shotgun family. Where sets like Shotgun Trips or Bunch spread the field with 11 personnel, Heavy Panther runs 23 personnel: two backs, three tight ends, and zero true receivers. You get the quarterback in the gun with a running back offset, a second back or wing tight in the backfield or flexed tight, and a wall of tight ends attached to the line. Defenses see that and immediately audible into heavy packages, which is exactly the point. The Gadget tag on this set tells you the design intent: it looks like a goal line short yardage grouping but operates out of the gun with zone read, counter, and QB run concepts baked in.
The play list splits cleanly into two buckets. The Mtn (mountain) run family gives you Mtn Counter, Mtn Inside Zone, Mtn Inside Zone Split, and Mtn HB Dive, all downhill gap and zone concepts with extra bodies at the point of attack. Then you have the quarterback run package, QB Blast and QB Power, which are absolute cheat codes if you run a mobile quarterback because the defense has to account for an extra ball carrier that no run fit accounts for. Mtn PA Slide is your play action shot off the same run action, and Mesh Sit and Mtn Spot are the two dropback concepts that make heavy personnel dangerous in the passing game.
The matchup advantage here is inverted from a normal spread set. Instead of isolating a receiver against a slot corner, you are isolating tight ends against linebackers and safeties who are already crowding the box. When the defense loads up with 4-4 or goal line personnel, your tight ends running Mesh Sit or Spot are matched against players with sub 60 man coverage ratings. Motion a tight end across the formation and watch the defense declare man or zone, then attack the leverage you just created.
Use this on second and short, third and short, and inside the five yard line where the defense must respect the run and cannot afford to play light personnel.
Motion a tight end across the formation pre snap to diagnose coverage, then run QB Power to the side the defense vacated or check to Mesh Sit if they declared man.
Hot route your offset back to a flat or angle route on Mtn Inside Zone and Mtn Counter to create a free release checkdown against blitz looks with no spy.
Run Mtn Inside Zone and Mtn HB Dive early to condition the opponent into crashing the interior, then break QB Blast off the same look for a walk in score in goal line situations.
On Mtn PA Slide, block your offset back and read the linebacker level. If the second level bites on run action, the tight end seam opens up for a chunk gain, but bail to the checkdown if the safety stays deep.
