Breakdown

Corner Strike is a two-way route concept out of Shotgun Doubles Y-Flex with 11 personnel that stresses both boundaries vertically. To the left, the two receivers run a crossing shallow drag/out combo underneath while a deep route breaks back to the sideline, creating a natural pick against man coverage. To the right, the slot receiver runs a quick out into the flat while the outside receiver stems upfield and breaks hard into a corner route toward the sideline. The primary read starts with the right side corner route against single high or man coverage, working back to the left side crossing routes and flat conversion if the corner is capped.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing two high safeties or rotating to single high, since Cover 2 shells with a hard flat defender can undercut the corner route and force you to work the crossing side. Watch the cornerback's leverage on the outside receiver, inside leverage or a soft cushion tells you the corner route has room to sit down in the boundary. Post-snap, key the flat defender's reaction to the slot out route, if he sinks too deep chasing the corner threat the flat opens up for an easy conversion. Beware of user controlled lurk defenders sitting in the middle of the field, they can jump the crossing routes on the left side if you telegraph that read too early. This play is vulnerable to Cover 4 or quarters shells where the corner is deep and outside help squeezes the corner route, so if you see four defenders spread deep, be ready to check down to the flat or crossing concept instead of forcing the corner throw.

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment before the snap, single high shells open up the corner route as your first read since it forces the cornerback to defend both the flat and the corner without deep help. Use motion or a quick glance at the slot cornerback's depth to confirm man coverage, since the corner route wins hard against man beaters when the defender is playing tight technique. Hot route the backside flat receiver into a deeper out or comeback if you see Cover 3 rolling to that side, giving you a zone beater window behind the linebackers. This play works best on second and medium or third and long when you need a chunk play, since the corner route can house it against overaggressive corners jumping underneath routes. Pair Corner Strike with Curl Flats or Stick from the same set to keep defenses guessing between vertical shots and quick game, then come back to Corner Strike once you have shown the shorter concepts and the defense starts sitting on underneath zones.
