Breakdown

PA Read is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Doubles Y-Flex that dresses up as an outside zone run before the QB peels off to throw. The backside receiver runs a deep corner route while the play-side flexed TE takes an outside release and works vertically up the seam, with the outside receiver on that side running a flat/drive route underneath and a running back sneaking out to the sideline as a checkdown. The primary progression starts with the deep seam or vertical route to test the safety, then works down to the corner breaking route, and finally settles on the flat route or checkdown if the defense sits on the intermediate levels. This is a play-action shot play designed to attack teams that bite on run action, giving you both a man beater vertical shot and zone beater underneath options.

Defensive Reads

Watch for two deep safeties pre-snap, which signals Cover 2 or Cover 4 and means the corner route may get squeezed, so prioritize the seam or flat route instead. If the linebackers do not bite on the run fake and stay in their zone drops, the underneath flat route and checkdown become your safest options against that discipline. Man coverage shows up as cornerbacks lined up tight on receivers with no visible zone spacing; in that case the corner route and seam route both have strong win potential against trail technique. Watch the play-side flat defender and any user-controlled linebacker sitting underneath, since a well-timed lurk can jump the flat route or undercut the seam if the QB telegraphs the throw. A blitz-heavy front with defensive ends crashing hard on the play fake can collapse the pocket quickly, so key the edge rushers post-snap to know how much time you have before checking down.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs (first or second and short to medium) when defenses respect the run fake, since the whole design hinges on linebackers and safeties stepping up on the play fake.

Pre-snap, check the safety depth: if you see one high safety cheating toward the seam receiver's side, that is your cue to throw the deep corner route on the backside since it should be one on one.

Use the flat route and checkdown as your answer versus zone coverage, especially if you see a Cover 3 shell with cornerbacks sinking into deep thirds and linebackers flowing to the run fake.

Hot route the flat receiver into a deeper option if you are getting blitzed frequently since the naked play-action design is vulnerable to fast interior pressure.

Pair this with Inside Zone or HB Draw earlier in a drive to sell the run action, then come back to PA Read once the defense starts keying run fits aggressively.
