Z Spot is the classic Spot concept run out of Shotgun Doubles Y-Flex, built to attack zone coverage with a five man protection behind it. The outside receiver to the trips side runs a corner route to clear the flat, the slot man runs the short hitch (the spot route) that sits down in the throwing lane, and the flat defender is pulled away by an underneath flare route out of the backfield, while the backside X and TE run vertical clearing routes to hold the single high safety and outside corner. Primary read progression starts with the corner route to look off the flat defender, works down to the spot/hitch sitting in the void, then checks the flare route as the outlet against a fast blitz look.

Defensive Reads

Key the flat or curl to flat defender first since Z Spot lives and dies on whether he widens for the flare route or sinks under the hitch. Zone coverages like Cover 3 and Cover 4 with a slow flat defender are the most vulnerable because the hitch sits right in the seam between underneath zones. Man coverage with a robber or lurk defender sitting in the shallow middle can jump the spot route, so watch for a linebacker cheating over the ball pre-snap. Cover 2 corners who sink hard on the corner route can undercut that throw, forcing the quarterback to check down to the flare route quickly. Aggressive blitz packages that bring five or six rushers can beat the protection before the sit route develops, so identify overload blitz looks pre-snap and get the ball out on time or check to a hot route.

Usage Tips

Look at the flat defender pre-snap because Spot is designed to freeze that player between the flare route and the sitting hitch route, and if he cheats to the flat, throw the hitch immediately for a free completion.

Use this on third and short to medium since the sit route sits down right around the sticks and gives you a high percentage conversion throw against zone.

If the CPU shows Cover 3 or Cover 4 with soft corners, hot route the backside vertical into a slant or dig to give yourself a true man beater option against man leaning shells.

Pair Z Spot with Four Verticals and Corner Strike from this same set so defenses cannot sit on the short hitch and have to respect the vertical shots off similar formation and motion.

Against Cover 2 or Tampa 2 shells, the corner route can be your first read since it settles behind the corner and in front of the safety, so check the boundary safety depth before the snap to confirm the window is there.
