Breakdown

Charger Flood is a classic three level flood concept to the trips side that stresses a single defensive zone with three routes stacked at different depths. The backside receiver runs a deep crossing route while the inline slot receiver on that side breaks off a corner route, giving you a two man read away from the flood if the defense overplays the boundary. On the flood side, the TE runs a deep clearing route up the seam and out, the slot receiver runs an out breaking route at intermediate depth, and the HB releases out of the backfield on a flat route, creating a high low low read that is a certified Cover 3 beater. This is a straight dropback pass with five in protection, no play-action or RPO elements shown in the diagram.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safety alignment, since a single high safety struggling to defend three levels to one side is exactly what this concept exploits. Check the cornerback depth on the flood side, a soft corner playing off man or a Cover 3 deep third alignment is the ideal shell for this play to attack. Post-snap, watch the flat defender, if a linebacker or nickel widens quickly to the HB flat route that usually means the underneath out route or the corner will be open behind him. Watch for a robber or lurk defender sitting in the intermediate zone, since a user controlled defender jumping the out breaking route can bait you into an interception if you do not check the corner route first. This concept can be shut down by aggressive man coverage with a deep half safety rolled to the flood side, since that gives extra help over the top on the corner route and forces you to rely on the backside crosser or the flat throw.

Usage Tips

Read the flat to the corner route first since that vertical clear out route usually pulls the deep third defender away and opens the corner window against Cover 3. If the cornerback sinks with the corner route, come back down to the intermediate out breaking route sitting underneath since that is your money throw versus zone. Use the HB flat route as your checkdown versus a hard blitz or when the underneath defenders squat on the out route, it is a safe outlet that also picks up positive yardage against overaggressive linebackers. Hot route the backside crosser into a deeper dig or have it settle if you are getting Cover 3 buzz rotation to the flood side, since that backside window can become the easiest completion when the defense overloads coverage to the trips. Pair this play with Charger Seams or Four Verticals in the same set to keep the defense honest, since both concepts attack the same flood side pre-snap look but punish different coverage rotations.
