Breakdown

Charger Y-Sail runs a classic sail concept to the closed side (right) paired with a two man snag look to the open side (left). The Y (tight end) runs the sail route flat to the sideline while the outside receiver on that side runs a corner route up top, stacking a high low read against Cover 2 and Cover 3 defenders. On the left, the outside receiver runs a deep comeback while the inner receiver runs a quick out underneath, giving the quarterback a second option if the sail side is capped. This is a zone beater built to attack Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells, with the primary read progression going corner route first, then sail route underneath, then working back to the comeback route on the backside.

Defensive Reads

Watch the deep half safeties before the snap since two safety shells signal Cover 2, which lets the corner route work behind the cornerback and in front of the safety. Key the flat defender or cornerback dropping under the corner route, if he sinks too deep the sail route underneath will be wide open for an easy pitch and catch. Look for a Cover 3 cornerback sitting on the sail route, if he jumps the flat immediately throw off the corner route behind him. Beware of user controlled safeties lurking the deep middle since they can rob the corner route if the quarterback stares it down too long. This play struggles against man coverage with no natural picks, so identify press man alignment pre-snap and be ready to hot route or check to a different concept.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify the safety alignment to confirm Cover 2 or Cover 3 before the snap since this concept is built to punish those shells specifically.

If you see man coverage with no help over the top, hot route the corner route into a fade or hitch to win one on one instead of forcing the sail read.

Use the sail route as your rhythm throw on third and short to medium since the flat route sits underneath zone defenders and gives an easy completion.

Combine this with Charger Cross or Charger Seams in your play calling sequence to keep defenses guessing between horizontal sail concepts and vertical seam shots out of the same Doubles Y-Flex look.

Against aggressive zone blitz teams, check the backside comeback route early since underneath defenders will be crashing on the sail side.
