Breakdown

Under Y-Option lines up with two receivers stacked to the left, a TE and outside WR to the right, and an RB in the backfield. The left slot runs an option route that breaks either outside or settles inside based on the leverage of the underneath defender, while the outside receiver on that side clears out on a deep in that crosses the field. On the right side the TE releases vertically up the seam as a clock-out route and the outside WR runs a straight vertical to stretch the deep coverage. The primary read starts with the option route, checking for the man beater conversion against man coverage or the soft spot sit against zone, then progresses to the TE seam if the option route is covered.

Defensive Reads

Watch the flat defender or slot corner leverage on the option route before the snap, tight inside alignment signals man coverage and outside alignment signals zone drop responsibility. Key the middle linebacker depth at the snap, a shallow drop means the option route sit down will be contested so widen the break outside instead. Track the safety to the TE seam side, if he bites down on run action or the option route the vertical TE and outside WR become one on one shots deep. This play struggles against a hard press man call with a deep half safety since the option route has no easy outlet and the deep routes get squeezed. Cover 3 with a fast flowing linebacker to the option side can also close the window quickly, so be ready to check down or throw with anticipation before the underneath defender fully sinks.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify if the defender over the option route slot receiver is playing outside leverage or inside leverage, since that dictates which way the route breaks. Against man coverage let the option route work outside for a quick pitch and catch, and against zone coverage sit it down in the void underneath the linebackers. If the safety rotates late to the TE seam, hot route the outside vertical on the right into a comeback to punish an overplayed shell. This play works best on second and medium or third and short since the option route gives a built in answer to both man and zone without needing a hard read on the deep shots.
