Breakdown
Under Y-Option lines up out of Shotgun Doubles Y-Flex with two receivers stacked to the left, a receiver on the outside right and a TE tight to the formation. The outside left receiver runs a deep crossing route to the opposite sideline while the inside receiver runs an option route that breaks outside underneath, and the right side receiver and the TE both push vertical seams up the field. This is a man beater at its core, using the option route to settle or break away from man coverage while the two vertical routes stress the deep half, so the primary read starts with the Y-option route based on the defender's leverage, then progresses to the vertical seams if the option gets taken away.
Defensive Reads
Man coverage with the corner and linebacker in trail technique on the two left receivers is the biggest vulnerability since the option route can break away or sit down against that leverage. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender can wall off the option route's outside break, so watch for the corner sinking into the flat zone post-snap. Two deep safeties splitting the field pre-snap signal a possible Cover 2 or Cover 4 shell, which can bracket the vertical seam routes and force the quarterback to check down to the option route quickly. A blitzing linebacker off the edge or a nano blitz look at the line should be picked up by the protection, but if the TE stays in to block, the seam route on that side disappears as an option. Watch for a lurking defender sitting in the middle of the field, since that user-controlled defender can jump the crossing route if the quarterback holds the ball too long.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, look for man coverage indicators like a corner shaded outside or a linebacker walked out on the slot receiver since the option route thrives against man leverage.
Use the hot route feature to adjust the option receiver's break point if you see the defender sitting deep, forcing a quicker settle for an easy completion.
This play works best on third and medium situations where the option route can convert against man coverage while the crossing route serves as a checkdown against zone drops.
Pair this play with Curl Flats or Stick from the same set to keep defenses honest, since those plays attack the same formation with shorter zone beating concepts.
If you see a lot of press man or blitz-heavy tendencies from your opponent, call this play after showing Inside Zone or HB Draw to catch linebackers cheating up on run reads.
