Charger Cross out of Shotgun Doubles Y-Flex lines up with a deep crosser from the backside receiver that stems across the field to the far sideline, while the Y receiver runs a deep dig that breaks hard toward the opposite sideline underneath the crosser. Underneath, one receiver runs a short in that settles across the middle as a shallow zone beater or checkdown option, and the outside receiver on the strong side runs a vertical seam to hold the deep defenders. This is a man beater built on the crosser and dig combo creating natural separation through traffic, with the primary read progression starting on the deep crosser, working to the dig, and checking down to the shallow in route if both are covered.
Pre-snap, identify press man alignment on the outside receivers since the crosser is designed to rub off traffic and separate from man defenders. Watch linebacker depth at the snap: shallow linebackers who sink too fast into the middle can undercut the dig route before it fully develops. If the defense shows a single high safety with man coverage underneath, expect the crosser and dig to be wide open in the intermediate zone. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender jumping the shallow in route will take away the checkdown option and force the quarterback to hold the ball longer. Watch for a user controlled defender sitting in a lurk spot over the middle since that defender can jump the crosser or dig route if the quarterback stares it down too long.
Use this on second and long or third and medium when you need to attack man coverage with natural pick action from the crosser and dig combo.
Check the middle of the field pre-snap: if you see a single high safety, the crosser and dig will have room to work against man defenders trailing across the field.
Hot route the shallow in to a drag or spot route against zone heavy looks like Cover 3 to give yourself a faster underlying outlet.
Pair this play with Charger Seams or Four Verticals in the same set so defenses cannot sit on the crossing routes and get baited into jumping shallow throws.
Look to user the deep crosser receiver manually against man coverage to help him fight through traffic and separate late in his route.
