Breakdown

Charger Cross out of Shotgun Doubles Y-Flex lines up two receivers to the left, a tight end and running back to the right, and a lone receiver split wide right. At the snap the outside left receiver runs a deep dig that stems upfield and breaks hard across the middle, while the inside left receiver clears out underneath on a corner route working to the same landmark before releasing vertically. The right side gives you a deep vertical from the outside receiver, a pivot out route from the tight end working back toward the formation, and the running back releasing on an angle route out of the backfield, making this a man beater built around the deep crosser as the primary read with the running back check down underneath.

Defensive Reads

Identify single high safety pre-snap since that alignment tells you the deep crosser will have a clean path across the field without a second deep defender waiting. Watch for a linebacker or slot corner sitting in a hook zone or playing a lurk technique, since that defender can undercut the crossing route if he reads it early. Check corner alignment on the outside receiver running the deep route, tight coverage with safety help over the top signals two high and a tougher window for the vertical shot. Post snap, track any delayed blitz or disguised pressure since the running back angle route becomes your answer against pressure looks that remove underneath defenders. Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells with sound linebacker drops tend to shut this down by squeezing the crosser, so be ready to check into a quicker concept if you see those shells pre-snap.

Usage Tips

Key the deep crosser as your first read since it is the built in man beater against linebackers and slot corners who cannot stay on top of the break.

Use this on second and long or third and long when defenses lean into off man or single high shells that give the crosser room to work across the field.

If you see press man across the board, hot route the running back to a quicker option or lean on the angle route out of the backfield as a checkdown against blitz.

Pair Charger Cross with Charger Seams or Charger Y-Sail in your play calling sequence so the defense has to respect verticals from the same formation before you come back with the crosser.

Against zone shells, look to the corner route sitting behind linebackers and in front of safeties as the zone beater instead of forcing the dig into a robber defender.
