Breakdown

Ohio Triple Cross runs a heavy crosser concept out of Shotgun Doubles Y-Flex with three receivers working across the field at different depths. The backside X runs a deep dig that crosses the field to the opposite hash, the slot receiver on that side breaks outside on a corner route, and the playside runs a deep crosser stacked over a shallow drag underneath from the TE, while the HB releases into the flat off a check release from the backfield protection look. This is a man beater at its core, using natural picks from the stacked crossers to create separation against man coverage, with the deep dig as the primary read against zone if the underneath crossers are taken away.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check the safety alignment: if both safeties are deep in a two high shell, expect Cover 2 or Cover 4 zone drops that funnel the crossers into waiting linebackers. Watch the cornerbacks over the outside receivers; if they are playing off man technique, the deep crosser and dig routes will have room to work against trail coverage. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker and any user controlled lurk defender sitting in the shallow zone, since this play is vulnerable to a linebacker sinking under the drag and jumping the crossing lanes. This play struggles against Cover 3 with a sky safety rotating down, since that defender can rob the deep crosser as it crosses the middle of the field. Man coverage with inside help or a robber safety in the middle of the field will disrupt the natural picks the crossers rely on, so be ready to check down to the HB flat route.

Usage Tips

Take the shallow drag first against man coverage since the traffic near the line creates natural rubs that spring it open almost immediately.

Look to the deep dig as your window read against zone coverage, especially Cover 3 or Cover 4 where the middle of the field opens up between the hashes.

Use the HB flat route as a checkdown against blitz looks or when the underneath zone defenders sink deep to take away the crossers.

Pair this play with Charger Cross or X Dagger in the same set so the defense has to respect multiple crossing concepts, making it harder for defenders to sit on any single route.

Best used on second or third and medium since the deep crosser and dig need time to develop, so avoid calling this against heavy pressure packages without checking the play first.
