Breakdown

X Dagger from Shotgun Doubles Y-Flex is a classic dagger concept pass play built to attack both zone and man coverage with a vertical clear out and an underneath sit route. The outside receiver to the boundary runs a deep dig that sits behind linebackers and in front of deep safeties, while the inline receiver stacks a vertical seam up the middle to clear out the middle of the field and pull the deep safety, and the backside receiver works a corner route to hold the far side defender. The running back releases into a shallow drag underneath from the backfield as a checkdown, with the primary read progression starting on the deep dig, moving to the vertical clear out if a safety bites, and finishing on the running back drag as the outlet.

Defensive Reads

Zone defenses that pattern match Cover 3 with a single high safety are vulnerable because the seam route occupies the deep middle and opens a throwing lane for the dig behind the linebackers. Cover 2 shells struggle because the dig route sits between the cornerback's flat zone and the safety's deep half, forcing a tough decision for the underneath defenders. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets beaten by the vertical seam route, especially if the linebacker covering the tight end cannot run with him downfield. Watch for a user controlled safety sitting in the middle of the field or lurking on the dig route, since a disciplined defender there can jump the route if the quarterback stares it down too long. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge or through the A gap can disrupt the play, so check protection assignments and expect the running back to be needed in pass pro rather than releasing on his drag route.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense shows two deep safeties or one high, since the dig route sits in the soft spot of a Cover 2 shell and the vertical seam is designed to punish single high looks like Cover 3.

If the corner is playing off coverage on the boundary receiver, take the deep dig with anticipation as soon as he breaks across the middle before the underneath linebacker can undercut it.

Hot route the running back to a check release if you expect a heavy blitz look, since he is your last read and needs extra time in protection against five or six man pressure.

Best called on second or third and long between 6 and 12 yards, where the dig route sits perfectly in the sticks and the vertical route stresses zone drops.

Pair this with Curl Flats or Stick from the same set to keep the defense honest on shorter combos, then come back to X Dagger once linebackers start jumping underneath routes.
