Slants out of Shotgun Doubles Y-Flex is a quick-hitting man beater built on rub concepts, sending both outside receivers and the slot on slant routes that cross the field at different depths while the Y (TE) works a shallow flex route to hold underneath defenders. The five-man protection gives the QB a fast rhythm throw, so this is designed to get the ball out in under two seconds against man coverage where the natural picks created by the slant angles spring receivers open against trailing defenders. The primary read progression starts with the widest slant to the play side, working inside to the slot slant, and finally to the TE flex route as a checkdown if the initial reads are covered.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing Cover 1 or Cover 3 by checking for a single deep safety, since man match coverage is the most vulnerable shell to the slant rub concept. Watch linebacker depth at the snap: shallow linebackers sitting in underneath zones can undercut the inside slant, so a User controlled defender lurking in that throwing lane is the biggest post-snap threat to this concept. If corners are playing off coverage with outside leverage, the slants will break open quickly since there is no jam to disrupt the route stem. Blitz packages that bring five or six rushers can beat this play before the rub develops, so recognize A gap or edge pressure pre-snap and be ready to get the ball out on time or check to a hot route. Cover 2 shells with hard flat defenders sitting on the slant angle can jump the route, so look for corners squatting at five yards rather than sinking deep before committing to the outside throw.
Use Slants on early downs or third and short when you expect man coverage, since the rub concept from the stacked slants beats press man and man match schemes especially well.
Check the pre-snap alignment of the corners: if they are pressed at the line with no safety help over the top, throw the outside slant immediately off the snap before the pick can be jumped.
Against zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4, hot route the backside slant into a speed out or bend the TE flex route into the flat to find soft spots between the underneath zone defenders.
Pair this play with Double Slants or Charger Cross earlier in a series to condition the defense to jump underneath routes, then counter with Four Verticals or PA Deep Outs off the same formation to hit over the top once safeties start creeping down.
On third and medium, throw the ball to the slot slant quickly and trust the rub to create separation rather than holding the ball and inviting a coverage sack from a delayed blitz.
