Read Option out of Shotgun Ace Offset is a true zone read run play with 12 personnel on the field. The QB meets the HB at the mesh point and reads the play side defensive end: if the end crashes down on the dive, the QB pulls the ball and attacks the edge, and if the end sits or widens, the QB hands off for the interior run. The offensive line blocks down and away from the read man, leaving him unblocked by design, so this play beats defenses that get aggressive with edge defenders and struggles against disciplined ends who stay home.
Key the play side defensive end pre-snap and post-snap, since his contain discipline is the entire trigger for this play's success or failure. Watch for scrape exchange linebackers who stay square and mirror the QB, as they neutralize the option read by taking away both the pull and the cutback lane. If the safety rotates down into the box pre-snap, expect the defense to be selling out on the run, so a bail to a pass concept in the set like Z Spot or Dagger can punish that overcommitment. Look for edge blitzes and nano blitz packages that send the play side end and an outside linebacker simultaneously, since unblocked extra rushers can blow up the mesh before the read develops. Sim or scripted CPU defenses often crash the end hard on this look, so pulling the ball and getting north quickly through the vacated lane is usually the higher percentage decision.
Use this on early downs (1st and 2nd and short to medium) when you want to stay ahead of the sticks and keep the defense honest against both run gaps. Pre-snap, count the box: if the defense has six or fewer defenders in the box, favor the dive read since interior blocking has a numbers advantage. Watch the play side DE alignment before the snap, a wide 9-technique tips you toward pulling and bouncing outside, while a tighter 5-technique favors the give. Pair this with Inside Zone and Outside Zone to condition the defense to bite on run fits, then hit them with PA Read or PA Comeback Seam off the same look once linebackers start flowing hard. Against aggressive user defenders who crash the mesh point every time, fake the pull and let the HB work through the dive lane since the defender's momentum will already be committed.
