HB Punch out of Shotgun Ace Offset is a power run play built around a downhill dive path behind a gap scheme up front. The diagram shows the offensive line pulling to create a power lane while the HB takes a slight lateral step before pressing into the B or C gap depending on the blocking surface that develops. This is strictly a run play with no route concept attached, designed to be a physical, north-south gap scheme run that overpowers the point of attack rather than beating man or zone coverage. The primary read is a one cut decision: identify the puller's kick out or log block on the edge defender and press the hole off his hip, bouncing outside only if the interior gap gets clogged.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, count the box defenders and check if the strong safety has crept down near the line of scrimmage, since an eighth man in the box is the biggest killer for this concept. Look at defensive tackle alignment: a shaded nose or 3-technique that stays home can blow up the interior gap before the puller arrives. Post-snap, key the play side linebacker's first step. If he scrapes flat and fills the gap without hesitation, the run has a low ceiling and should be abandoned quickly. User-controlled defenders who spy the mesh point or crash down early on the dive action can diagnose and blow this play up, so an aggressive human user at linebacker is a major red flag. This run struggles hardest against gap-sound run fits like Cover 3 Sky with a hard scraping Mike or heavy blitz packages that send extra bodies through the A and B gaps before the pull develops.
Usage Tips
Call HB Punch on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short when you need to establish a physical run identity and set up play action later in the set. Watch the box count pre-snap. If the defense shows six or fewer in the box this play has a numbers advantage and should hit downhill fast. Use hot routes sparingly here since this is a run play, but you can motion the second TE across the formation to check for man coverage versus zone before the snap. If defenders key the pulling linemen and flow hard to the play side, pair this call with Buck Sweep or Read Option later in the drive to punish overpursuit with backside cutback lanes. Against stacked boxes or heavy blitz looks, bail into Curl Flats or Quick Slants to keep the defense honest and force them out of run support alignments.
