HB Punch out of Shotgun Ace Offset is a power run play with the HB aligned offset in the backfield and both TEs tight to the formation for extra blocking surface. The line pulls a blocker across the formation to lead through the off tackle hole, giving the runner a designed downhill path with a lead blocker punching through the crease. This is a run play built to win with numbers at the point of attack, and the primary read is the play side double team and puller: press the hole, read the down block, and cut off the lead blocker's path into the second level.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a stacked box with eight defenders, this is the primary counter to HB Punch since it removes the numbers advantage the pull creates. Key the play side linebacker depth. If he is sitting tight to the line pre-snap, he can beat the puller to the hole and blow up the design. Look for a user-controlled defender crashing down hard off the edge, this is a common way human defenders try to spill the play before the lead blocker arrives. Man coverage on the backside is largely irrelevant here since this is a run concept, but heavy blitz packages sending extra rushers into the play side gap are the biggest threat. If the defense shows a single high safety with the linebackers flowing fast to contain, expect the crease to close quickly and consider bouncing outside instead of forcing it inside.

Usage Tips

Run this out of 12 personnel on early downs when you want to establish tempo and keep defenses honest against your pass sets in the same set like Y-Sail and Dagger.

Check the defensive front pre-snap. If the box is light (six or fewer) with two-high safeties, this play has a clean angle to the second level.

Use motion or a quick pre-snap check to identify if the defense is stacking the box for run support before committing to the play.

Pair this call with PA Comeback Seam or PA Read later in the drive so the play-action off similar formation looks freezes linebackers who bit on Punch earlier.

On short yardage or goal-to-go, HB Punch is a strong nano blitz counter since the extra gap blocker neutralizes A-gap penetration before it disrupts the mesh point.
