Defensive Reads
Man coverage with corners playing tight outside leverage is the ideal shell for this play since both slants create natural rub action against man defenders. Watch for a linebacker sitting in the shallow drag lane, since he is the primary underneath defender who can jump the crossing routes if he reads the quarterback's eyes. Cover 2 with hard corners jamming at the line can disrupt the timing of both slants, so be ready to check to the drag route as a checkdown. Post-snap, key the safety rotation, if a single high safety cheats toward the play side slant before the ball is thrown, that signals a possible lurk defender sitting in the crossing lane. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers up the middle can beat this play if the drag route blocker is not accounted for, so identify Mike linebacker blitzes before the snap and get the ball out on the first read.
Usage Tips
Get pre-snap confirmation of man coverage by checking corner alignment tight to the receivers with no safety help rotating over the top before the snap.
Use your hot route to convert the backside slant into a fade or speed out if you see a Cover 3 shell rolling that corner into a hard outside zone drop.
This play thrives on third and short or second and short since the timing window closes fast and defenders can rally if you hold the ball.
Snap the ball quickly off the play clock to prevent the defense from diagnosing the mirrored slant concept and jumping both throwing lanes.
Pair this with Curl Flats or Dagger from the same set so the defense has to respect both the quick slant window and deeper crossing routes, keeping linebackers honest on their drops.
