Dagger out of Shotgun Ace Offset lines up two receivers to the left with a deep vertical seam route and an underneath drag/spot route crossing behind it, while the in-line tight end to that side runs a flat route to hold underneath defenders. On the right side, the isolated receiver runs a deep dig (square-in) that settles behind linebacker depth, giving the offense a classic dagger stem of vertical clear-out plus deep in. This is a man and zone beater built around vertical spacing: the primary read is the deep dig from the isolated side, with the vertical seam route serving to clear out the safety and the drag underneath as the checkdown against pressure.
Defensive Reads
Key the free safety pre-snap; if he is aligned deep in the middle of the field, expect Cover 3 or Cover 1 and be ready to jump the dig route with your user-controlled defender since that is the primary target. Watch linebacker depth at the snap: if the middle or weak side linebacker sinks quickly into the throwing lane, you can undercut the dig before it fully develops. Corner positioning on the isolated side matters, if the corner presses or sits in the flat, use a deep half safety to help over the top on the dig to prevent the explosive completion. Beware of the flat route and drag combination against zone blitzes, since those become the quarterback's answer if the deep routes are covered, so keep a linebacker or nickel defender assigned to those shallow zones. Bring pressure with a nano blitz or edge rush package to disrupt the timing needed for the dig route to sit down, because Dagger depends heavily on a clean pocket for the deep read to connect.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing single-high or two-high safety look because Dagger thrives against single-high shells where the seam route can occupy the deep middle defender. If you see Cover 3 or Cover 1, prioritize the deep dig since the seam route will hold the free safety and open the middle of the field. Against Cover 2, hot route the flat route to a deeper option or use it as a check valve since Dagger is designed to sit the dig in the honey hole between the corner and safety. Use motion or a hard count to bait linebackers into revealing blitz intent, then get the ball out quickly to the drag route if you see pressure. Pair this call with Curl Flats or Quick Slants earlier in a drive to condition the defense to expect shorter routes, then hit Dagger for an explosive gain once linebackers start sitting on underneath throws. Best used on second or third and medium to long situations where the deep dig has room to develop and the offense can afford the extra time in the pocket needed for the route to break open.
