Dagger out of Shotgun Ace Offset with 12 personnel is a classic vertical stretch concept designed to attack zone coverage, particularly Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells. The play art shows the backside receiver running a deep dig that settles across the middle while the inline slot runs a vertical seam straight up the field to clear out and occupy the deep safety, creating the dagger stretch. On the frontside, the outside receiver runs a short out route in the flat while the tight end runs a shallow drag underneath, giving the quarterback a quick checkdown option if the deep shot is not there. The primary read starts with the seam clearing the safety, then progresses to the dig sitting down in the vacated zone, with the flat and drag as the outlet against man pressure or blitz looks.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a single high safety rolling to the middle of the field pre-snap, which signals Cover 3 or Cover 1 and tells you the seam route has a strong chance to stress the deep defender. If the safeties are split evenly at depth, expect Cover 2 or Cover 4, and prioritize the dig route since the seam runner will draw double coverage from the corner and safety. Key the middle linebacker's depth at the snap, since a shallow drop from him opens a throwing window for the dig, while a deep drop can undercut the route and bait a user pick if he sits and reads the quarterback's eyes. Look for a lurking defender sitting in the throwing lane of the dig route, especially in Cover 3 sink or Tampa 2 shells, since that user controlled linebacker can jump the route if the seam does not fully occupy the safety. Beware disguised man blitzes with a slot corner or nickel defender pressing the seam route receiver, since Cover 0 or Cover 1 pressure can collapse the pocket before the deep routes have time to develop, forcing an early checkdown to the drag or flat.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify whether the safety is rotating to a single high shell or staying split, since Dagger thrives when the deep safety has to respect the seam route and vacates the middle for the dig to settle into.

If you see Cover 3 with a deep middle defender, throw the seam route as soon as it clears the linebacker level since the middle of the field is often a soft spot behind the underneath zone drops.

Against Cover 2, the dig should be your first look because the two deep safeties cannot cover both the seam and the intermediate crosser, so hold your eyes on the dig as it crosses the field.

Use the drag route as a built in hot route against Cover 0 or man blitz looks, since it clears out quickly and gives you a safety valve before the seam and dig develop.

Pair this play with Curl Flats or Quick Slants earlier in a series to set up the defense expecting short throws, then hit Dagger for the explosive play once they start jumping the underneath routes.
