Flanker Drive out of Shotgun Ace Offset (12 personnel) shows a five man route concept with no visible protection breakdown, meaning it is a straight dropback pass. The backside receiver runs a deep dig that breaks in behind the drive route, the flanker runs a shallow drive route crossing underneath from the formation strength, the slot runs a corner breaking route to the flat, the tight end runs a short out to the flat, and the running back releases outside on a check release flat route. This is a Cover 4 beater built on the drive concept, with the primary read progression starting on the crossing drive route underneath, then working to the deep dig, and finally the flat routes as outlets against zone drops.
Pre-snap, check for two deep safeties split wide with linebackers stacked tight, this is the classic Cover 4 shell this play is designed to exploit through the deep dig route sitting behind the underneath drops. Watch the strong side flat defender post-snap, if he stays wide to cover the flat route the shallow drive route across the middle will be uncontested for an easy completion. Identify man coverage by checking if the flanker's defender mirrors his crossing route step for step, since in man coverage the drive route loses its natural rub advantage and the quarterback should progress quickly to the dig or flat options. Look for a user-controlled linebacker sitting in the shallow crossing lane, this is the biggest defensive counter to this concept, and if spotted the quarterback should immediately climb the ladder to the deep dig route. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge can disrupt the timing needed for the dig route to fully develop, so check protection numbers pre-snap and expect the quarterback to check down to the RB or TE flat routes against heavy pressure looks.
Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to bait linebackers and confirm if you are facing zone or man before the snap since the drive concept thrives when the underneath defenders sit and read the quarterback. Against Cover 4 or Cover 2, key the flat defender on the strong side, if he widens for the RB or TE flat route the crossing drive route will have a soft window behind him. Hot route the running back to a check release protection call on third and long or in obvious pass rushing situations to buy the quarterback more time for the deep dig to develop. Pair this call with Curl Flats or Quick Slants earlier in a drive to condition the defense to sit on shallow routes, then hit the deep dig for an explosive play once linebackers start jumping the drive route. Combine this play with Dagger or PA Comeback Seam in your play-calling sequence to attack both shallow and deep zones with similar initial reads, keeping defenders guessing on run fits versus pass drops.
