The HB takes a lateral aiming point off the tackle box, reading blocking flow to find the natural cutback lane rather than a predetermined gap. This is a run play designed to beat gap and one-gap fronts, with the primary read progression starting outside at the edge defender and working inside to the first daylight crease.

Defensive Reads

Watch for defensive tackles anchoring hard against zone flow, since one gapping fronts with disciplined DL can string the play out and kill the cutback lane. Key the play side linebacker depth before the snap, if he is sitting shallow at five yards or less he can flow fast enough to erase the bounce read. Identify user controlled defenders shooting gaps immediately after the snap, since a good user player will abandon zone assignment to blow up the front side double team. Look for safeties rotating down into the box post-snap, which signals run blitz or heavy front and should push your HB decision toward the backside cutback instead of bouncing outside. Outside zone struggles against odd fronts with a true nose tackle who can two gap and clog the interior combo blocks, so expect a tougher gain against 3-4 base looks.

Usage Tips

Check the defensive front pre-snap and identify if the defense is showing an odd or even front, since outside zone hits harder against even fronts with fewer natural gap fills.

Use the offset TE alignment to identify overhang defenders and linebacker depth before the snap, this tells you whether the edge is soft enough to bounce outside.

Hot route the offset TE into a chip or seal block if you see a blitzing linebacker showing pre-snap, which keeps the edge clean for the cutback.

Pair this with Inside Zone and Read Option out of the same formation to keep the defense honest on run fits, then hit them with Jet PA Cross or PA Read once linebackers start crashing downhill.

Run this on early downs in normal distance situations to set up explosive play-action shots later in the drive once the defense over-commits to stopping the run.
