Defensive Reads
Watch for cornerbacks pressing at the line, since press man coverage struggles to recover on the vertical stem of the corner route before it breaks outside. Key the safety rotation immediately after the snap, if you see a single high safety flow to help over the top on one side, work the corner route away from that help. Look for underneath linebackers or nickel defenders sitting in zone drops, since the shallow crossers can get picked off by zone defenders sitting at the same depth, making this vulnerable to Cover 3 sink concepts. Identify user-controlled defenders jumping the crossing routes early, this signals a lurk read and means you should reset to the corner route as your primary answer. Beware of disguised blitzes off the edge, since the protection is built to hold up against standard fronts but can break down against overload blitzes or nano blitz packages attacking the tackles.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify if the safeties are showing two high or rotating to one high, since Corner Strike thrives against single high looks where the corner routes attack the void left by the rotated safety.
Use motion or a hot route on the inside receiver to convert the shallow crosser into a shorter option if you see man coverage with no help underneath, this speeds up the timing against blitz-heavy calls.
This play excels on second and long or third and medium situations where the defense is likely to play off man or match zone, giving the corner routes room to work.
Pair Corner Strike with Curl Flats or Quick Slants from the same set to keep the defense guessing between deep shots and quick game, since both plays start from the identical Ace Offset alignment and disguise your intentions.
Against aggressive blitz packages, check into Mtn HB Slip Screen or HB Punch as a changeup, since defenses that key on your dropback tendencies from this personnel will overpursue and open up the run game.
