Breakdown

Stick X-slant is a quick-game concept out of Shotgun 4wr Pack Trips that combines the trips-side stick combo (flat, stick, and corner) with a backside X receiver running a slant. This is a man beater first and foremost since the slant creates natural separation against press or trail technique, but the stick concept on the trips side also gives you answers versus both zone drops and off-man coverage. The primary read progression is backside slant to frontside stick, then flat as the checkdown, so you are working the isolated one-on-one before working back into the trips stick combo if the slant window is not there.

Defensive Reads

Watch the backside cornerback pre-snap, if he is in press man with no safety help over the top the slant should win immediately against any trail technique. Identify the linebacker depth on the stick side, if the underneath defender is sitting shallow he can jump the stick route and force you to work the corner route or flat instead. Look for a user-controlled defender lurking in the shallow zone between the slant and the stick concept, this is the most common way defenses take away both reads at once in competitive play. Cover 3 shells with a hard sinking corner or robber safety can undercut the slant route, so key the middle of field safety rotation post-snap to decide whether to stay on the slant or reset to the stick combo. Blitz packages that bring five or six rushers force a quicker decision, so recognize pre-snap if the defense is showing an overload look since the quick game timing of this play is designed to beat pressure if you get the ball out on time.

Usage Tips

Check the backside cornerback alignment pre-snap because if he is playing off or shaded outside, the slant window opens up immediately and you should be ready to fire that throw within your first read.

If the defense shows a two high shell, expect the stick concept to be your primary answer since the slant will have a safety sinking underneath in most zone coverages.

Hot route the flat route on the trips side into a quick out if you are seeing hard outside leverage from the corner, this gives you a rhythm throw versus Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells that squeeze the stick.

Use this on early downs paired with Curls or Double Ins from the same set so the defense has to respect both the quick slant and the intermediate crossing routes, this keeps linebackers honest and prevents them from sitting on the stick concept.

On third and short, this play is money against man coverage because the slant beats trail technique instantly, but be ready to check it down to the flat if you see a disguised blitz since the quick game protects against pressure.
