Slant Slot Fade is a trips-based man beater out of Shotgun 4WR Pack Trips that combines a quick slant from the slot with an outside fade from the boundary receiver, giving the quarterback a two-level attack against tight coverage. The trips side works a slant and flat combo to occupy underneath defenders and clear space, while the backside fade isolates the single receiver for a one-on-one shot against a cornerback. The primary read starts with the backside fade against single coverage, then progresses to the slot slant if the defense rolls extra help over the top.
Watch the boundary cornerback alignment before the snap, if he is playing tight man press with no safety help over top, jump the slant immediately since the fade window will be contested Identify single high safety shells like Cover 1 or Cover 3, this play is designed to exploit exactly this look by isolating the fade receiver Against Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with two deep safeties, the fade throw becomes low value since there will be a safety sinking over the top, so key the slant and flat combo instead User-controlled defenders sitting in a deep half or playing lurk technique in the middle of the field can jump the slant route, so pump fake or look off before committing to that throw Blitz packages that send extra rushers off the edge will collapse the pocket quickly, so recognize pre-snap if the defense is showing six or seven in the box and get the ball out on the slant as a quick answer
Check pre-snap for single high safety looks since that tells you the backside cornerback is likely on an island for the fade route
If you see two safeties deep with a cushion on the boundary receiver, work the slant read first since the underneath defenders will have inside leverage taken away
Hot route the trips flat defender to a quick out if you are facing a hard blitz look, this gives the quarterback a checkdown against pressure
This play pairs well with Four Verticals in your play-calling sequence because both threaten the deep middle and force safeties to stay honest, setting up easy slant windows later in the drive
Best used on third and short to third and medium where the slant is a high percentage conversion throw and the fade is a chunk play bonus if the corner bites on the underneath route
Use in red zone fade situations against man coverage corners who lack elite height or jumping attributes
