Ohio HB Angle is a man beater built out of Shotgun 4WR Pack Trips that isolates your running back on an angle route against a linebacker in coverage. The trips side occupies the coverage shell with vertical and intermediate routes while the backside typically works a shorter breaking route, giving you a two-level answer if the angle route gets taken away. Your primary read is the HB angle route out of the backfield, then work to the backside route if the linebacker sits underneath or a blitz forces a quick throw.
Pre-snap, identify whether a linebacker or safety is aligned over the running back, since this is the defender who has to cover the angle route in man concepts. Watch for a nickel or slot defender cheating inside pre-snap, this often signals man coverage and tells you the angle route will win against a slower linebacker. Post-snap, key any user-controlled linebacker spying the backfield, if he sits and reads the quarterback instead of releasing with the back, the angle route will be cut off and you need to move to your backside progression. Look for zone drops from the second level defenders, if linebackers sink into passing lanes rather than chasing the back, this play loses its main advantage and you should prioritize the trips side route combo instead. Diagnose blitz packages by checking for extra rushers crashing the box, since a hot linebacker blitz can beat the protection before the angle route develops, requiring a quick check to a shorter breaking route or a throwaway read.
Use this play on early downs or third and short when you expect man coverage, since the angle route creates natural separation against linebackers who cannot mirror the horizontal break.
Check the middle of the field pre-snap, if you see a single high safety with man coverage indicators underneath, the HB angle route becomes an almost automatic completion against linebackers.
Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or slant if you diagnose zone coverage, since the trips side alone may not be enough to stress a zone shell.
Pair this play with HB Draw or Inside Zone from the same personnel to keep linebackers honest, then come back to Ohio HB Angle once they start biting on run fakes.
Sequence this with Stick X-slant or Double Slants earlier in a series so defenders start jumping underneath routes, then hit the angle route for a big gain when they overcommit to the trips concepts.
