Four Verticals out of Shotgun 4wr Pack Trips sends all four wide receivers straight up the field on vertical stems, stressing the deep middle and the seams simultaneously. This is a pure man beater and Cover 2 beater since it floods the deep zones faster than safeties can rotate over the top, and it also punishes Cover 3 by overloading the middle third with two seam runners crossing the single deep defender's zone. There is no blocking scheme nuance here since it is a five-man protection with the HB staying in to chip or block, and the primary read progression starts with the deep middle seam (the two inside slot verts against Cover 2 or Cover 3), then works to the boundary streaks if the safety bites underneath.
Presnap, check safety depth and spacing, if both safeties are shallow (within 8 yards) they are vulnerable to getting run past on the vertical stems. Watch cornerback press alignment, if corners are playing off man technique they will struggle to stay on top of the outside verts, favoring man beater concepts like this one. Postsnap, key the middle linebacker's drop, if he sinks deep into the throwing lane he can act as a lurk defender and jump the inside seam, so be ready to reset to the far seam or check down to the HB. Identify blitz packages presnap by looking for stacked or walked up linebackers, a five man or six man pressure look means the quarterback needs to get the ball out fast or check to a hot route since there is minimal protection help. This play struggles most against a true Cover 4 or Cover 6 shell with disciplined deep safeties, since four defenders staying deep can match every vertical route and eliminate explosive windows.
Presnap, identify single high versus two high safety alignment before the snap because this play thrives against two high shells with soft corners.
If you see Cover 2, target the deep middle seam between the safeties before they can close the window, this is the fastest way to draw a pass interference or complete a big play.
Against Cover 3, read the flow of the deep middle defender, if he widens to a hash the opposite seam route is wide open behind him.
Hot route the outside streaks to slants or the HB to a flat route if you diagnose an aggressive man blitz presnap, this turns the play into a quick rhythm throw instead of a deep shot.
Pair this play with Curls or Stick Nod earlier in a series to condition the defense into sitting in shallow zones, then call Four Verticals to attack over the top once linebackers and safeties start creeping up.
Use this on second and long or third and long situations when you need an explosive gain, and avoid calling it into a defense showing heavy blitz indicators since protection is a clean five man scheme with minimal help.
