Drive X-post is a trips-based dropback pass built around a drive concept combined with a deep post from the X receiver working the backside. The drive concept (in/under combo) clears out underneath zones and gives you a quick answer against man coverage while the X-post attacks the middle of the field and stresses single-high or Cover 4 shells. This is a man and Cover 4 beater, and the primary read progression starts with the X-post if you see a single-high safety or Cover 4 rotation, then works back to the drive combo underneath if the safety stays deep or the post window closes.
Identify single high safety alignment pre-snap, this tells you the X-post has a soft window in the middle of the field Watch linebacker depth at the snap, shallow linebackers signal man coverage or a blitz package that leaves the drive concept open underneath Key the flow of the deep safety after the snap, if he stays over the top of the post the quarterback should reset to the drive combo Look for a user lurk defender sitting in the shallow zone, this is the biggest threat to the drive concept and can bait a bad throw Cover 4 quarters shells with disciplined safeties can shut down the post read, forcing the quarterback to check down early to the drive concept
Check the safety alignment pre-snap, if you see a single high safety or Cover 4 quarters shell, live to the X-post immediately off the snap
Use the drive concept underneath as your answer against Cover 2 or Cover 3 where the post window gets capped by a deep safety
Motion the trips receiver to confirm man versus zone before the snap, if the defender follows across the formation you know you are getting man coverage and can trust the post
Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or slant if you are facing a heavy blitz look, this gives you a fast throwing lane away from pressure
Pair this play with Four Verticals and Seam X-comeback in your call sheet to keep defenses guessing on whether you are attacking vertically or working the drive concept underneath
