Inside Zone out of Shotgun 4WR Pack Trips is a true zone run play designed to attack downhill gaps with a lighter personnel grouping (10 personnel), spreading the defense with four receivers to create favorable box counts for the HB. The offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme, working double teams at the point of attack and climbing to the second level based on defensive front and linebacker flow. This is not a play-action or RPO look, it is a pure inside zone hand off, so the primary read progression is the HB reading the frontside double team and cutting off the play side guard or center's block, bouncing outside only if the frontside gets sealed and a bubble opens up.
Diagnose the defensive front before the snap, this play struggles against 46 fronts or bear fronts that clog interior gaps with extra defensive linemen. Key the linebacker depth at the snap, if backers are stacked tight to the line at four yards or less they can beat blockers to the hole before the zone scheme develops. Watch for a user-controlled Mike linebacker sitting in the A or B gap pre-snap, this is a common nano blitz look that will blow up inside zone before the HB gets the handoff. Identify if the defense is playing zone coverage with safeties rotating down into the box post-snap, since that late rotation often signals a run blitz designed to outnumber the offensive line. Track the play side defensive end and 3-technique alignment, a wide 9-technique or heavy shade on the guard changes the natural cutback lane and forces the HB to read backside instead of bouncing frontside.
Call this play against light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box since the 4WR spread forces defenses to honor pass coverage first. Check pre-snap for base 4-3 or nickel fronts with off-ball linebackers, these are ideal since they give the HB time to read the line before backers can fill gaps fast. Avoid this play into stacked fronts with eight in the box or heavy blitz packages showing overload pressure, since the zone blocking scheme cannot handle numbers disadvantages. Pair this run with Slot Out or Stick Nod from the same set to keep defenses honest with quick game passes that punish defenders creeping into the box after seeing Inside Zone on early downs. Use Inside Zone on second and short or first and ten to stay on schedule, then set up HB Draw or PA WR In later in the series once the defense starts overplaying the interior run.
