Smash X-dig combines a classic smash concept to the trips side with a deep dig from the X receiver, making it a natural Cover 2 beater that also stresses single-high safety shells. The corner route from the trips slot clears out the deep quarter while the underneath hitch or flat route occupies the corner, opening the dig as it works across the middle of the field into the vacated void. Primary read progression starts with the X-dig working from the backside, then comes to the smash combo (corner over hitch) if the middle linebacker or safety widens to help on the dig.
Pre-snap, identify if the safeties are showing a two-deep shell with corners playing off, that alignment tells you the dig has a clean lane before the safety can rotate over. Key the flat defender post-snap, if he sinks with the corner route instead of squatting on the hitch, the underneath route becomes the outlet and the dig read gets delayed. Watch for the middle linebacker or nickel defender spying the dig route, a linebacker who opens his hips early to the trips side signals man coverage and tells you to trust the dig against a natural pick. If the defense brings a nano blitz off the edge or overloads the trips side with a blitz package, the dig from the backside becomes the true first read since it clears fastest against man pressure. Cover 4 or quarters shells with corners playing outside leverage on the corner route can jump the smash combo, so lean on the dig and be ready to check down if the underneath zone defender sits in the throwing lane.
Use pre-snap motion or a peek at the safety alignment to confirm whether you are facing a two-deep shell before snapping, since the dig sits down in the exact window Cover 2 leaves open between the corner and the safety rotation.
If the defense shows Cover 3 or a single-high look, hot route the smash corner route to a fade or adjust the underneath hitch into a flat route to beat the sideline defender instead of forcing the dig into a crowded middle.
This play works best on second and medium to second and long, or third and 6 to third and 10, since the dig needs time to develop and the smash combo needs the field horizontally stretched.
Pair this call with Curls or Stick Nod earlier in a series to condition the defense to sit on shorter routes, then hit Smash X-dig once linebackers start jumping underneath throws.
Watch the user-controlled defender at the second level pre-snap, if he shows blitz or overplays the flat, get the ball out on the dig quickly before the pocket collapses.
