Seam X-comeback out of Shotgun 4wr Pack Trips is a half field man beater built around the seam runner on one side and the X receiver breaking back on a comeback route on the backside. The trips side occupies underneath zones and man defenders with a mesh of shorter routes while the seam threatens the deep middle, creating a natural high low read against single high looks. Primary progression starts with the seam route for an explosive shot, then works to the X-comeback if the safety rotates over the top or if a corner presses and gives up the sideline break.
Pre-snap, identify if the free safety is aligned deep middle, a single high shell opens the seam route against man or zone defenders lacking deep help. Watch the cornerback over the X receiver, if he is playing off at seven or more yards he is conceding the comeback break, but if he presses expect a jam that delays the route and favors the seam read instead. Post-snap, track any user controlled safety flowing to the middle of the field, a lurking defender sitting on the seam is the biggest threat to this concept and should trigger an immediate progression to the comeback. This play struggles against zone blitz packages that drop a linebacker into the seam lane while sending extra rushers, since it removes the natural window the seam route relies on. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender can also jump the comeback route if the quarterback holds the ball too long, so timing the throw before the corner reads the break is critical.
Check the safety alignment before the snap, a single high shell tells you the seam has a one on one lane against the linebacker or nickel defender in coverage.
If you see two high safeties, immediately key the X-comeback since the seam window shrinks and the comeback exploits the cornerback playing off in a cloud or quarters shell.
Hot route the trips side underneath receivers into shallow drags or hitches if you are getting a zone blitz look, this keeps the quarterback's checkdown alive when the seam and comeback are covered.
Pair this play with Four Verticals in your call sheet to condition the defense into staying deep, then use Seam X-comeback to attack the comeback route when corners start sitting on verticals.
Best used on second and medium or third and long situations where the defense is more likely to play off coverage, giving the X receiver room to sit down on the comeback.
