Read Option out of Pistol Weak Slot is a true option run play that puts the quarterback in the pistol behind an offensive line built for zone blocking, with the HB aligned to read the mesh point off the QB. The diagram shows no receivers running routes, only the offensive line and backfield involved, confirming this is a designed run play rather than a play-action or RPO look. The primary read is the QB reading the play side defensive end: give to the HB on a zone track if the end crashes down, or pull and attack the edge himself if the end stays wide.
Defensive Reads
Watch the play side defensive end pre-snap, if he is sitting wide to take away the keep the QB should hand it off immediately on the dive read. Check linebacker depth at the snap, stacked linebackers who fly downhill on the mesh point will open up the keep lane on the edge. Identify contain defenders on the defensive edges, disciplined contain that stays home on the QB is the best counter to this play. Look for defenses that crash both the end and the linebacker simultaneously on run downs, that overcommitment is exactly what the option read is designed to exploit. Beware of user controlled defenders spying the QB, a smart user can sit in the mesh point area and take away both options if the offense telegraphs the call.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs when you need to establish tempo and force the defense to respect both the dive and the keep before you start dialing up play-action shots off it.
Check the alignment of the play side defensive end and outside linebacker before the snap, if they are crashing hard on run downs the keep read will be wide open.
Use this play as a base setter alongside Lead Read Option and Power Option in the same set so the defense cannot key on one specific blocking scheme or ball carrier.
Set up Jet PA Cross or PA Boot later in the series once the defense starts sending extra defenders downhill to stop the option, that misdirection will hit for explosive gains.
Avoid calling this against heavy inside blitz looks with contain defenders staying home, since both the dive and keep lanes get clogged quickly.
