Dig Wheel out of Pistol Weak Slot is a play-action style dropback pass built on a three level flood to the closed side. The slot receiver runs the wheel route up the sideline off the flat, the outside receiver breaks in on the dig, and the two backside receivers stretch the field vertically on go routes. The HB kicks out on a check release wheel while the offensive line pass protects, making this a man beater that also stresses zone defenders forced to cover the flat to deep sideline seam. Primary read progression starts with the dig underneath if the middle of the field opens, then works to the wheel route for the explosive shot if a linebacker or safety bites on the shorter route.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap identify if the defense is showing man coverage with a linebacker or nickel matched on the slot receiver, since that alignment is most vulnerable to the wheel route beating underneath coverage. Check safety depth before the snap, a single high safety struggles to help over the top on both the wheel and backside go routes at the same time. Post-snap watch for a user controlled defender sitting in a lurk position near the flat, as this can jump the wheel route early and bait a turnover if the quarterback forces the throw. Cover 3 zone defenses with a hard flat defender can undercut the wheel route timing, so read the dig route as the safer completion in that shell. Blitz heavy fronts with man coverage behind them create the best environment for this play since the wheel route wins quickly before pressure disrupts the pocket.
Usage Tips
Look for man coverage or a single high safety pre-snap since the wheel route creates a natural pick and separation against man defenders trailing out of the backfield or slot. If you see a linebacker walked up over the slot receiver, expect a favorable wheel matchup and target it immediately off the play fake. Use motion or a hot route to check the backside receiver into a shorter option if the defense shows two high safeties clogging the deep thirds. This play pairs well with X Dig and PA Boot in the same set since both threaten similar horizontal stretches, keeping the defense guessing between quick digs and deeper wheel shots. Best called on second and medium to second and long when defenses are more likely to play zone and susceptible to the double move nature of the wheel route.
