The offensive line blocks straight ahead with the fullback leading through the hole to seal the first linebacker to the play side, while the halfback takes the handoff and reads the interior gap for a crease. This is a pure run play with no play-action or route concepts attached, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier is to find daylight off the fullback's lead block, hitting the A or B gap before bouncing outside if the middle is clogged.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, count the box defenders and check if the linebackers are stacked tight to the line, since a loaded box with seven or more defenders will clog this run. Watch safety depth before the snap, because a safety creeping down into the box signals run support that can beat HB Slam at the mesh point. Post-snap, user the middle linebacker downhill immediately to attack the fullback's lead block and blow up the play before it develops. Key on defensive tackle penetration, since a fast interior push from the defensive line can disrupt the handoff timing and force a negative play. Against man coverage looks with blitzing linebackers, this play can get stuffed quickly if the blitz picks up the fullback lead block, so avoid calling it into known nano blitz packages.
