Lead Read Option out of Pistol Weak Slot is a 21 personnel run play built on a zone read look with a lead blocker in the backfield. The QB reads the play side defensive end while the fullback leads through the hole and the offensive line runs zone blocking to the play side, with the two outside receivers running vertical routes to hold the corners deep and take defenders out of the box. This is a run heavy read option play, not a pass concept, and the primary read progression is the QB keying the unblocked edge defender to decide between handing off to the HB on the give or pulling it and following the lead blocker on the keep.
Watch the play side defensive end pre-snap, if he is lined up wide and crashing hard on snap the QB should pull and keep behind the lead blocker. Check linebacker depth, stacked linebackers sitting close to the line signal run blitz and favor a quick give before the alley fills. Identify safety rotation, if both safeties are deep and the corners are playing off man or soft zone the vertical routes will not get immediate help so the run lanes should stay clean. This play struggles against defenses that spy the QB with a linebacker or user a defender specifically on the edge, since that removes the numbers advantage the read option depends on. Look for user controlled defenders creeping toward the mesh point post snap, if a defender abandons zone assignment to jump the QB early that is a tell to go back to a straight handoff concept next play call.
Use this play on early downs like first and second and ten when defenses are still base personnel and have not loaded the box. Check the defensive end and outside linebacker alignment pre-snap, if the end is crashing hard down the line every snap you can key on pulling the ball more often. Motion is not shown here but pair this call with Orbit HB Zone Wk or Orbit Triple Option from the same set to keep the defense guessing between orbit motion looks and this static read option shell. If the safety is sitting low in the box, hot route one of the vertical receivers into a quick out to hold the corner and open an extra crease for the edge. Sequence this play after a few passes like PA Dagger or X Dig so the linebackers stay honest in coverage drops instead of crashing downhill on run reads. Against aggressive nano blitz teams that send the edge every snap, lean on the pull and keep since the lead blocker can seal the alley defender.
