PA Boot from Pistol Weak Slot 21 personnel opens with a play-action fake to sell the run before the QB boots out toward the blue outlet route for a naked rollout look. The route concept features a deep corner route from the outside receiver, a vertical seam or post from the inside slot that stems upfield after a hitch step, and an intermediate crosser sitting underneath as a check-down against zone drops. This is a play-action man beater built off the boot action, and the primary read progression starts with the deep corner route on the outside, works down to the underneath crosser if the corner is capped, and finishes with the QB checking down to the flat route on the rollout if both are covered.
Defensive Reads
Watch for edge defenders staying home on the boot side, a disciplined defensive end who does not bite on the run fake can contain the QB and blow up the entire concept. Identify cover 3 or cover 4 shells pre-snap since the deep corner route can be squeezed by a flat footed cornerback sitting in the boundary. Post-snap, track the flow of linebackers, if they flow hard to the run fake and vacate the underneath crosser lane that route becomes an easy completion. User a defender to spy the boot lane or drop a linebacker into the throwing lane to disrupt the QB timing on the rollout. Cover 2 with a deep half safety over the corner route is the best answer, forcing the QB to eat pressure or throw into a contested window over the top.
Usage Tips
Sell the run fake fully with the analog stick or run commit before booting out to keep linebackers and safeties frozen in the box.
Use this on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and medium when defenses are keying run based on personnel and formation tendencies.
Check the safety alignment pre-snap, if you see two high safeties rotate to single high after the snap that usually signals man coverage underneath which favors the deep corner route.
Hot route the underneath crosser into a sit route against zone heavy defenses to give the QB a quicker outlet if the boot lane gets contained.
Pair this play with HB Dive or HB Slam earlier in a drive to condition the defense into biting on run action, then call PA Boot to punish overaggressive linebacker flow.
