Breakdown

Smash Y-Corner out of Pistol Weak Slot is a classic Cover 2 beater built on vertical route stacking to the strong side. The Y receiver runs the corner route from the inline alignment, stretching the deep quarter while an underneath receiver clears out on a flat or drag route to hold the shallow defender. On the backside, the offense stacks a corner route over an out and a wheel combo to create a natural flood, giving the quarterback a high low read against two deep safeties. The primary read starts with the Y-Corner against the deep half defender, then works backside to the flood concept if the strong safety jumps the corner route.

Defensive Reads

Key the strong safety pre-snap. If he is aligned deep at eight or more yards, he is likely sitting in a two high shell that Smash Y-Corner is designed to attack. Watch the cornerback's press or off alignment on the Y receiver. Off coverage cornerbacks will sink under the corner route, so the quarterback should expect a tighter window and throw with anticipation. Track the flat defender's reaction to the underneath clear out. If he stays home instead of widening, the defense may be sitting on the smash concept and the quarterback should reset to the backside flood. Identify user controlled defenders lurking near the corner route stem, since a user jumping the Y-Corner is the biggest threat and forces a check down to the backside wheel or flat route. Recognize Cover 3 or single high safety looks, which allow one defender to rob the deep corner route and force the quarterback into a low value checkdown.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or third and medium when you expect Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells since the Y-Corner route is designed to sit in the honey hole between the corner and safety.

Read the flat defender pre-snap. If he is sitting at five yards or less, the underneath clear out route will drag him out and open a throwing lane to the corner.

Use hot routes to convert the backside wheel into a deep out or seven route if you see man coverage, since the wheel can get grabbed and rerouted by an aggressive linebacker.

Pair this play with Roll Out Smash in your sequencing so the defense has to respect both a standard dropback smash concept and a rollout version, forcing zone defenders to hesitate on their drops.

Against Cover 3, check to PA Dagger or PA Boot from the same set since Smash Y-Corner loses efficiency when a single high safety can rob the corner route.
