Off the fake, the deep threat runs a vertical route up the numbers while a receiver breaks across the field on a deep crosser, and a third route sits underneath on a short cross/drag to give a quick outlet. The design is a man beater because the crosser stresses linebackers and safeties who have to carry receivers across the field, and the vertical route punishes any deep man coverage that gets picked or rerouted at the top. Primary read progression starts with the vertical shot route, moves to the deep crosser working across the field, and checks down to the short crossing route underneath if both are covered.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the defense bites on jet motion with a linebacker or defensive back shifting outside, which signals man coverage responsibilities. Check safety depth before the snap, since a single-high shell leaves the deep crosser and vertical route with more room to operate against man coverage underneath. Post-snap, watch for a user-controlled defender sitting in the middle of the field who can jump the deep crosser as it crosses the linebacker level. Zone coverage with sound linebacker drops can clog the crossing routes, so look for hook zone defenders sinking into the passing lanes before committing to the crosser. Heavy blitz packages can beat this play if the offensive line in 21 personnel cannot handle extra rushers, so check protection numbers and be ready to check down to the short crosser quickly.
Usage Tips
Use the jet motion pre-snap to bait linebackers into flowing with the sweep action, which opens up the crosser behind them.
Call this on early downs or manageable third downs when you have play-action tendencies established from your run game in this set like HB Dive or Counter Str.
If the safety cheats deep pre-snap, hot route the vertical route into a comeback or dig to avoid throwing into a two-high shell.
Pair this with Zone Fake Jet or Jet Pass Fk Zone in the same series to keep defenders guessing on jet sweep versus jet play-action looks.
