PA Dagger from Pistol Weak Slot uses play action to hold the linebackers before attacking the seams and flat. The two outside receivers run vertical seam routes stacking the levels, one slot receiver runs a deep dig sitting behind those seams while the backside receiver runs a shallow flat route to hold underneath defenders. This is a play-action pass built to punish Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells by clearing out the underneath zones with the seams and settling the dig into the void behind the linebackers. Primary read progression starts with the deep dig over the middle, then works to the two seam routes based on safety rotation, with the flat route as the checkdown if the middle is taken away.
Defensive Reads
Watch safety depth before the snap, if both safeties are shaded deep and equally spaced you are likely facing Cover 2 and the dig route will have room to sit in the window between them. A single high safety cheating to one side signals Cover 3 or Cover 1, which tells you to favor the seam route away from the safety help. Linebacker depth at the snap is critical, if they sink hard on the play action fake it confirms they respect the run and the dig will come open quickly behind them. User controlled defenders sitting in the intermediate middle zone are the biggest threat to the dig route, so be ready to check down to the flat if you see a user lurking that area. Nickel or dime blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge can beat this play if the quarterback cannot get through his fakes in time, so recognize hot pressure indicators like walked down corners or crashing outside linebackers pre snap and be ready to throw off the fake early.
Usage Tips
Sell the run fake by letting the play action animation play out fully before working through your reads, this holds linebackers and freezes the flow of the defense. Check pre snap for two high safeties, if you see Cover 2 or a two high shell the dig sitting behind the linebackers becomes your first read since it splits the safeties. Against single high looks like Cover 3, prioritize the seam route to the side where the deep third defender is widest since that seam has the most room to work. Hot route the flat route into a deeper drag if you are seeing aggressive underneath zone drops that clog the shallow area, this gives you a crossing option that clears the same congestion. Pair this play with a quick game concept like Slants or a boot action play like PA Boot earlier in a drive so linebackers respect the run fake and bite harder on this shot play later. Best called on second or third and medium when defenses start keying run more against Pistol formations.
