Counter Str out of Pistol Weak Slot is a Power Run concept built to attack the strong side edge with misdirection. The offensive line shows down blocks at the point of attack while the backside guard and tackle pull to lead through the hole, kicking out the edge defender and letting the puller work up to the second level. The HB takes a counter step away from the flow before pressing through the pulling blockers, so this is purely a gap scheme run play with no pass option attached and the primary read progression starts with the frontside double team, then the puller's kickout block, then the lead blocker climbing to the second level.
Defensive Reads
Watch linebacker depth and shoulder angle pre-snap, if they are flowing hard to the play call side before the snap they are likely reading run keys and will get sucked in by the counter step. Identify if the defense is running a scrape exchange, this is the primary counter to gap schemes and will have a defensive end sit and a linebacker replace him in the hole. Key the strong safety alignment, if he is stacked in the box already the defense may be selling out to stop the counter and you should consider a different run concept from this set. Post-snap, watch for user-controlled defenders spying the backfield instead of reading blocks, aggressive human defenders will often overrun the counter action and can be gashed if the HB presses the cutback lane. Against a fast-flow 3-4 defense with linebackers keying the pulling linemen, this play can get blown up quickly since the extra hat in the box negates the kickout block advantage.
Usage Tips
Run this out of Pistol Weak Slot on early downs like first and ten or second and short so defenses have not committed to pass shells yet.
Check the defensive line alignment pre-snap: if you see a 4-3 under front stacked hard to the strong side, the counter action away from that flow becomes even more deadly.
Use the pulling guard and tackle as your visual key, patience is everything here, let the counter action fully develop before pressing the hole rather than bursting downhill immediately.
Pair this with HB Dive or Read Option from the same set to keep linebackers honest on both hard downhill runs and misdirection, forcing them to hesitate on flow reads.
If the defense starts crashing hard on counter action after a few reps, mix in Power Option or Lead Read Option from the same set to punish overaggressive linebackers flowing wrong.
